Abuse of ADD Medication on Campus
It can be tempting to sell your medicationâitâs a quick way to make money, and you have the medication available. Approximately 26 percent of adolescents who are prescribed stimulant medication for ADD sell or give away their medication (Poulin 2007). Donât do this! Most colleges have strict drug policies that include mandatory disciplinary hearings. Some colleges even automatically expel students caught selling drugs. In addition, you can be prosecuted for a criminal offense. It doesnât matter if you are selling cocaine or selling your prescription medicationâit is illegal either way. Any money you made from selling your medication would have to go right to your legal fees, and you might have difficulty getting accepted to another college with a record of an expulsion or suspension for selling drugs. And, for the rest of your life, you would have to check that little box on job and school applications next to the question âHave you ever been convicted . . .â It is not worth it.
Your friends may ask you if they can have a couple of pills because they have a big test or project due the next day and need to stay up. Just donât go there. Even if you arenât selling your medication, itâs still not okay to give it to people. Medication affects everyone differentlyâeach personâs body chemistry is unique. Giving someone one of your pills, even with good intentions, can have disastrous results. If a friend takes one of your pills and dies, you could be charged with involuntary manslaughter. In a survey of over nine thousand undergraduates, it was found that 8.1 percent had used stimulant medication illicitly (McCabe, Teter, and Boyd 2006). Thatâs a large group of young people putting themselves at risk unnecessarily. Protect yourself, and donât let your friends risk their health.
